Time Travelers’ Book Club

Blog

15 Oct

By Linda Kubitz

The September meeting of the Time Travelers’ Book Club brought seven members together to share books and cups of tea on Sunday, September 7. Each  of the books was set in the time period 1945-1960 or published during those years. Once again, the books presented led to great discussions, as members briefly shared the plots, prompting others present to jot down the titles for future reading.

Books presented include the following:

    1. The Best of Norman Rockwell, filled with photograph-like paintings of everyday people and events, in the post WWII years.

    2. The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles.

Two motherless brothers intend to travel to California for a new start, but encounter two friends who have come up with an another plan, heading instead to New York City.

    3. Dreams of Joy by Lisa See

In 1957 a young woman puts herself into great danger when she travels to Shanghai, through Communist China, to search for her birth father, an artist.

    4. Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan

A woman poet and writer, who wrote letters to C.S. Lewis for spiritual answers, fell in love with him.

    5. The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis.

A boy discovers he is not who he thinks he is and flees to Narnia to search for his identity, with surprising results.

    6. Stillmeadow Sampler by Gladys Taber

A charming, light-hearted chronicle of 1950s daily life in a 17th century farmhouse, on 40 acres in Connecticut.

    7. The Offing by Benjamin Myers

An unlikely friendship between a young man and an older woman, set in the former smuggling village of Robin Hood’s Bay, England.

    8. Home for Christmas by Susan Branch

A endearing look at a large, 1950s family, without much money, as they anticipate and celebrate Christmas.

    9. Independence by Chitra Divakaruni

A look at the lives of three sisters in 1940s Bengal, when India gains its independence from British rule and is partitioned into India and Pakistan.

    10. The Wheel of Life by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, MD

A lesson on how to live well: an adventure of the heart: powerful, controversial, and inspirational.

Join us for tea and book talk at the next meeting of the Time Travelers’ Book Club, Sunday, February 9, 2026, 2:00, upstairs at the museum. Bring a book to share with a setting in the years 500 – 1000, or written during those years.
