New Rotating Exhibit: Mary Genevieve Murphy Wedding to Henry Ward Wright in 1890
Martin Murphy Jr.’s grand-daughter, Mary Genevieve, had a lavish wedding at her father’s (B. D. Murphy) opulent residence in San José, presided over by Right Reverend Archbishop Riordan. The wedding was the society event of the year and covered by no fewer than four local newspapers. One paper gave an ecstatic rendering of the occasion: “…society was joyous in the expectancy of an event of such brilliancy as has never been witnessed before and would not again very soon.”
The San Francisco Bulletin featured a full-length article on the splendor of the occasion, including a minute description of the many costly gifts the couple received. Due to generous gifts from her descendants, the SHS is in possession of most of those wedding gifts as well as photographs, dinner sets and books the family collected which will be on display in the rotating exhibit room from November to spring.
